Program Description

Deakin University with campuses located in Geelong, Melbourne or Warrnambool, Australia. A comprehensive university, including courses on Australian culture Deakin's semester or academic year program study abroad program enriches the academic experience as it challenges a student to embrace a new culture and experience Australia while earning academic credit towards a Winthrop degree. Deakin has three principal campuses - from the busy multiculturalism of Melbourne, to the distinctive regional flavor of the bayside and coastal campuses of Geelong and Warrnambool.

Location

Deakin University is located in Victoria, Australia's smallest mainland state. Victoria has Australia's second largest population with more than 4.5 million people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. It is a place of great contrasts - of ocean beaches and mountain ranges, deserts and forests, volcanic plains and vast sheep and wheat farms. The state has long been regarded as the cultural center of Australia, with a historic architectural elegance that characterizes the capital, Melbourne, and its regional cities. Victorians combine a strong cultural tradition with a contemporary and relaxed lifestyle, a distinct sense of community and a passionate interest in sport. Victoria is also the major centre of education and research in Australia.

Academics

Students apply to take undergraduate and postgraduate level courses (called “units” at Deakin). Most units have a weighting of 1 credit point which is equal to 3 credit hours at Winthrop. Study Abroad students are required to take a full-time load of 3-4 Deakin credit points per semester (12 credits hours at Winthrop). Students must request permission if they wish to take a 5th course and permission is not guaranteed. Deakin study is a mix of lectures and tutorials, supplemented by practical classes or fieldwork. Lectures are held in state-of-the-art lecture theatres with large groups of students. Tutorials usually follow lectures and give students a chance to discuss topics in detail.

Geelong Campus: Each resident is housed in single room accommodation with phone and computer access. Bedrooms are furnished, heated and carpeted. There are shared bathrooms, dining rooms, laundry and recreational areas. Five weekly meals are included in this housing option.

Melbourne Campus: The Student Village provides single room accommodation for students in a co-educational and multi-cultural environment. All units have a communal lounge, kitchen, bathroom and laundry facilities. As students are responsible for preparing their own meals, each unit contains a fully equipped kitchen.

Warrnambool Campus: The Student Residences are set amidst spacious grounds which extend to the banks of the Hopkins River. The residences provide accommodation for 235 students in a co-educational and multi-cultural environment. Various styles of accommodation are offered. Each resident is accommodated in their own furnished bedroom and all buildings have communal lounge areas, kitchens and bathrooms. Laundry facilities are also available. Three weekly meals are included in this housing option.

Internships

As a Study Abroad student you are eligible to apply for internships provided you are in at least your third year of study, with a substantial portion of your major completed. The internship usually accounts for a quarter of a full-time semester study load. Currently internships are available in the areas of Social Work, Sociology, History, Journalism, Environmental Science, Public Relations, Media Arts, Policy, Graphic Design, Performing Arts (Dance/Drama) and Business.

Orientation

Deakin's unique three-day Orientation Program is designed to make the transition into Australian university life as easy as possible. The Spring orientation (February) is held along the Great Ocean Road and the fall orientation (July) is held in the Grampians National Park. In these relaxed and informal settings, students are introduced to various aspects of Australian culture and life at Deakin. The Program features mountain biking through the pristine wilderness, guided hikes along cliff tops overlooking the Southern Ocean, surfing lessons plus workshop sessions on successful integration. Deakin academic staff gives presentations on the Australian environment, Australia's obsession with sport, and Australian film. Trips include visiting Australia's natural wonders such as the Twelve Apostles along the Great Ocean Road or Mackenzie Falls in the Grampians.
