This course will focus on the works of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, the much envied couple of the Jazz Age fame who appeared to have it all. Yet, their perfect life was a myth, one who lived in the shadow of infidelity, alcoholism, and profound mental illness. They were gifted writers who came to tragic ends, and this course will follow their rise and fall. In doing so, consideration will be given to the content, style, and diction within many of their famous short stories as we learn who really authored them. Much of Zelda's work was, in fact, published under her husband's name. Additional attention will be given to the influence of foreign culture as we examine the effect of place on composition. An integral part of the class will be a trip to Lausane, Switzerland and Paris, France in December.
