Program Description

Spanish Language and Latin American Culture Program

The one-semester program is offered jointly by the Fundación Jose Ortega y Gasset and the University of Minnesota's Learning Abroad Center. The Fundación, located in the heart of downtown Buenos Aires, is in one of Argentina's most elegant and prestigious buildings. Students learn Spanish as well as global and cultural issues focused on Latin America in general and Argentina in specific. A diverse Argentine faculty brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the classroom. Extracurricular activities include experiencing Argentine culture, including sampling local food, discussing literature, and
experiencing music and dance (tango!).

Location

The elegance of Europe and the spirit of South America live side by side in Buenos Aires. Founded by immigrants along the shores of the Rio de la Plata, Buenos Aires built its identity on Spanish, Italian and French influences, as seen in its grand boulevards, expansive parks and magnificent architecture.
Nearly 40% of the Argentine population lives in the capital, making this “Paris of the Americas,” a city of more than 13 million.

Academics

Students take two courses in the appropriate level of Spanish and up to three elective courses (electives are taught in English). The faculty is Argentinean, specialists in their academic fields and in teaching foreign students, chosen by the Fundación.

Housing and Meals

Students have two housing options:
(1) Apartments - Students live in comfortable, well-equipped apartments, a five-minute walk from the Fundación. Two to four students share an apartment, which includes single or double bedrooms, a bathroom, common living area and kitchen. Breakfast, dinner and weekly cleaning service are included in the program fee. There are numerous cafés and bars within walking distance.

(2) Homestays - Students live in their own room in an Argentine home and become part of an Argentine family. The family provides two daily home-cooked meals, breakfast and dinner. Most homestay placements are within walking distance to the Fundación campus.

Excursions

Several planned tours and day trips show the city’s and country's historical and cultural highlights. Destinations include San Isidro, Tigre, San Antonio de Areco, Luján, and, in Uruguay, the historical city of Colonia del Sacramento. Students will also attend cultural fairs in Buenos Aires, including San Telmo's in Buenos Aires' art quarter; Matadero, the only folk and gaucho fair inside the city; and Parque Avellaneda.
