Program Description

The academic year or semester program at Kingston University in London, England is ideal for Winthrop theatre or business majors as well as those students wanting to take electives. Kingston University has established itself as one of the United Kingdom’s top teaching universities.

Location

Kingston University is located in SW London (central London is 25 minutes by train) in Kingston upon Thames, a riverside town on the borders of London and Surrey. Kingston offers a safe, pleasant living environment, is a major retail destination with a great nightlife and the historic Market Square. The university is surrounded by beautiful parkland and countryside. Hampton Court Park is just across the bridge and Richmond Park is nearby, popular respites for students and faculty alike.

Academics

As visiting students, Winthrop students take classes with Kingston students, integrating fully with the academic and student life of the university. Students select courses that fulfill major, minor or elective requirements. Attending the university for an academic year would normally earn a student between 24 and 36 credits.

Language of Instruction

English

Eligibility

- Second semester sophomore standing and above
- Winthrop students annual enrollment limit of 10 students
- Minimum 2.75 GPA

Housing and Meals

Students who are attending for the academic year may apply for a room in a residence hall. Most are self-catering single rooms with shared bathrooms and kitchens but some en suite rooms are available at a slightly higher rent. Students are required to sign an agreement for 40 weeks (cost between £2,720 and £3,510).

Because of the need to sign up for 40 weeks, accommodation in halls is not practical for students attending for a semester, although during Spring semester a few rooms may be available. It is therefore recommended to stay in local homes within easy distance of the university. The accommodation is always a single room in a home, access to the kitchen for the preparation of meals, and with a shared bathroom. Rent (£65 - £85 a week) is paid to the landlord/lady weekly in advance. Kingston’s Accommodation Office locates lodgings for visiting students. There is no meal plan. Students have access to kitchens in their housing and prepare meals for themselves.

Arrival and Orientation

Kingston University will meet students at the airport and hold a two-day on-site orientation for all students.

Excursions

As part of the British studies course, a number of sites are visited throughout the country. There is a fee for this course.
