Egypt

Description

Located in Northern Africa, Egypt borders Libya to the west, Sudan to the south, and the Gaza Strip and Israel to the east. The northern coast borders the Mediterranean Sea and the eastern coast borders the Red Sea. The banks of the rich Nile River is where most of the population resides due to the fact that this is where the only agriculture is located. Although it has the Nile flowing through it, Egypt is considered the driest country in the world, with its dry hot summers and cool winters. The Sahara Desert takes up much of the land in Egypt along with the Libyan Desert where small amounts of the population subsist.

The government body rests in Egypt\'s capital, Cairo. The President, also known as the Chief of State oversees the republic that declared its independence in 1956 from the United Kingdom. The Prime Minister is the executive power, although he shares this position with the President. Freedom House, an international human rights group, deemed Egypt as \"not free\"; the country still employs inhumane treatment to men and women. However, they are making efforts to change this such as several constitutional amendments being approved, including anti-terrorism acts in 2007, and the establishment of the National Council for Human Rights in 2003.

Egypt is known for its Gaza Pyramids, the Great Sphinx of Gaza, and the Valley of Kings, all once part of an ancient civilization and historic culture which has survived into present day Egypt. The country is famous for one of the first written languages, hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphics are found in the Egyptian art which followed a strict set of rules and meanings in the ancient times. There are ancient wall paintings that show historical symbols and stories of Pharos that still today, have great significance. The cuisine consists of local culinary traditions, which has similarities with eastern Mediterranean cuisine, such as the falafel and the kebab.
